A Call to Action: Ending Violence in the Name of Tradition

I recently had a distressing experience in Umuahia, Ibeku-Irijie, where the celebration of the new yam festival turned violent. Instead of a joyous occasion, the event was marred by individuals wielding weapons, including cutlasses and locally made guns. During a 20-minute visit to FMC Umuahia, I witnessed multiple victims being brought in with severe lacerations and gunshot wounds.

It's alarming that the authorities have allowed this dangerous trend to persist, citing cultural tradition as an excuse. The notion that carrying cutlasses during the new yam festival is an acceptable cultural practice is unacceptable. This has created an environment where youths exploit the celebration as an opportunity for extortion, cultism, and violence, shouting their slogans and causing chaos.

I strongly advocate for a reevaluation of this tradition and the promotion of peaceful celebrations. It's essential to prioritize public safety and well-being over harmful cultural practices. I urge the relevant authorities to take decisive action to address this issue and ensure a secure environment for all citizens.
