The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria has expressed frustration over the prolonged delays in the Hope Waddell University project, citing distractions from the Okagwe community as a major hindrance.
In an address presented to the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engineer Ikechukwu Emetu, the Principal Clerk of the General Assembly, Most Rev. Dr. Miracle Ajah, highlighted the Church's commitment to the project despite the challenges.
The project, launched in 2008, aimed to establish a university in Okagwe Ohafia, but has faced numerous setbacks due to internal crises within the community, including disputes over traditional headship and leadership of the development union.
Despite the Church's efforts to engage in dialogue and find a peaceful resolution, the agitators have continued to spread misinformation, claiming that the Church has abandoned the project.
However, the Church has achieved significant progress at the university site, including the completion of several buildings and facilities, contradicting the false claims.
The Church is now calling on the Okagwe community to guarantee the security and safety of workers and future students, assist in rebuilding destroyed structures, and formally invite the Church to discuss terms for resuming work.
The fate of the Hope Waddell University project hangs in the balance, and the Church appeals to its members and the Ohafia community to keep the faith and not give up on the project.
