The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has expressed his condolences to the victims of the Afia Nkwo market fire disaster. The devastating incident, which occurred on Thursday, December 19, 2024, destroyed goods and properties worth millions of naira.

In a statement from his office, Engr. Emetu promised to work with the State Fire Officer to assess the need for immediate installation of firefighting equipment in Ohafia Local Government. This proactive measure aims to prevent similar disasters from occurring in the future.

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning during the dry season, emphasizing the importance of taking preventive measures to mitigate the risk of fires. He also announced plans to constitute a committee to examine the extent of the damage and take appropriate action.

Engr. Emetu, who is currently away on official assignment, has promised to visit the affected area upon his return. This visit will enable him to assess the extent of the damage to the market, which serves as the hub of commercial activities in Ohafia.
