Historic Bill Passes Second Reading: Michael Okpara University to Become Conventional University
Yesterday, a landmark bill reached a significant milestone as it passed its second reading. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, seeks to transform Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State into a conventional university, expanding its institutional mandate.
As a premier institution focused on agricultural sciences, MOUAU has made substantial contributions to Nigeria's agricultural development. However, by broadening its scope to include diverse disciplines, the university will amplify its impact across multiple sectors.
With this bill becoming law, Michael Okpara University will introduce programs in fields such as:
- _Arts_
- _Medicine_
- _Law_
- _Social Sciences_
- _Humanities_
This diversification will attract a larger and more varied student population, ensuring MOUAU becomes a hub for learners from different academic and cultural backgrounds.
Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu expressed confidence that, with colleagues' support, the bill will receive necessary legislative approval, contributing to the advancement of Nigeria's educational system, not just in Abia State but nationwide.
